& ISO
ISO is an abbreviation
of International
Organization of
Standardization,
which was founded
in 1974. ISO issues
a set of globally
accepted standards.
In 1987, ISO, joining
forces with IEC
(International Electrical
Committee), published
the first authoritative
quality management
and assurance standard.
ISO 14001, however,
is the first internationally
recognized environment
management and protection
standard.
Certification of
ISO 9001 Quality
Assurance System
ISO 9001 certification
indicates that the
holder of the certificate
has obtained advanced
quality management
capability.
ISO is a network
of the national
standards institutes
of 148 countries,
on the basis of
one member per country,
with a Central Secretariat
in Geneva, Switzerland,
that coordinates
the system.
ISO is a non-governmental
organization: its
members are not,
as is the case in
the United Nations
system, delegations
of national governments.
Nevertheless, ISO
occupies a special
position between
the public and private
sectors. This is
because, on the
one hand, many of
its member institutes
are part of the
governmental structure
of their countries,
or are mandated
by their government.
On the other hand,
other members have
their roots uniquely
in the private sector,
having been set
up by national partnerships
of industry associations.
ISO 14001 Environmental
management systems
Recently, in European
countries and North
America, it becomes
a fashion that consumers
only purchase ISO
14001 certified
products. However,
to the ears of China's
consumers, ISO 14001
is a strange name.
In the eyes of
businesses, ISO
14001 represents
the highest level
of enterprise management.
Only those ISO 9001
qualified companies
can submit applications
of ISO 14001 environmental
management system
certification. In
addition to its
rulings in quality,
stringent requirements
regarding raw material
purchase, manufacture
process, usage of
finished products
place very high
barrier to qualify.
In western countries,
ISO 14001 is always
resourced as a non-tariff
barrier to weaken
the competitiveness
of products made
in developing countries.
Therefore, ISO 14001
is often referred
as "International
passport" of manufacturers.
In the eyes of
consumers, ISO 14001
means health. Take
audio products as
an example, it's
known that premium
audio speakers are
made of high density
poly boards. The
benzene and phenol
contained will volatilize
into the ambient
and thus cause chronic
harm to human body.
According to international
standard, these
high-density poly
boards can be divided
into A, B, C groups.
ISO 14001 requires
Class A high-density
poly boards to be
used on audio speakers.
No adversary impacts
will be made on
the ambient. Secondly,
speakers failed
to pass strict tests
will generate much
residual sound waves.
The ultrasonic and
subsonic, which
forms major portion
of the residual
waves, may harm
human beings. For
example, for military
purposes, ultrasonic
and subsonic weapons
are already widely
used. Just imagine,
when a will-be mama
takes antenatal
training and never
know that these
residual sound waves
are really hurting
her baby. Only a
audio product is
manufactured under
the guidance of
ISO 14001, can people
really enjoy "healthy
music". ■
